Joanne Brand Joanne Brand recently released her latest novel, Capes and Crosses which tells us about the KKK when it ruled Colorado in the 1920s. The KKK controlled the Colorado state government and even turned our well-known Ben Stapleton into a Klansman in order to be elected as Denver’s mayor. The author could not properly tell about the lives at that time of the Blacks or the Jews. Therefore, she chose to emphasize the discrimination and hate of Catholics at that time.
In her stories, Brand continues to bring historical facts along with a compelling story so that the readers can imagine her characters, the scenes, and the action. The author has written about various historical times including war scenes, those left behind, the KKK, the struggles with tuberculosis, the great depression, women’s suffrage, the Vietnam struggle of both sides in this country, wife of abuse, and much more. Every story Brand writes, tells about life as it was during that time. The author builds each character from the heart. The reader visualizes that person’s feelings and actions, and the reader is eager to find out what happens next. Brand tends to tell the inner strength of women and each novel is different in many ways but shows the woman’s story. Also, the author characterizes the men in her stories just as the reader would imagine and feel. Her characters come to life as the reader feels the story develop.
Joanne Brand continues to write and mingle history in her novels. Believable characters and the era settle easily into her works and create a page-turner. Readers also learn a snippet of history they may have forgotten or didn't know.
